Akiyu Hatano:
Biography
August
18, 1967 - June 30, 2006
Akiyu was born in Tokyo, Japan. She spent her
childhood
years in Japan and Texas and graduated from Cornelia Connelly High
School in Anaheim, California. She received an undergraduate
degree in Psychology and a Masters in Education from Harvard
University. Akiyu worked as an educator and social justice
advocate
in New York City, San Francisco and Oakland. Her heart
belonged
to the West Oakland Community School (WOCS), the charter school that
she started with her long-time friend, Marjorie
Wilkes.
Through her dedication and selfless devotion to WOCS, she engendered a
sense of hope and potential in the hearts of many underserved
children. In the last two years of her life, Akiyu worked as
an
Education Program Officer for the Walter and Elise Haas
Foundation. She remained active in her local community as a
board
member and president of the Japanese Community Youth Council
(JCYC), and as the
“Team Mom” for the Oakland High School
Wrestling Team.
Akiyu
is survived by her loving husband, Japheth Aquino, sister Hiroyu
Hatano, brother-in-law Brad Rabin, and nephew Leif Kenta Rabin. She will always be
lovingly remembered as a wife, sister, daughter, aunt, friend, and
teacher. She is cherished by many friends and loved
ones.
Her
passion and commitment to the lives of young people will
continue. We hope to honor her legacy by establishing a
memorial
fund in her name.
